South Brooklyn Health Receives $1 Million in FY23 Capital Funding to Purchase Cardiology Equipment
Dec 14, 2022
NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health today announced it received $1 million from New York State Assemblyman William Colton to replace six echocardiogram machines to support the expansion of our cardiac services. South Brooklyn Health is now a New York State-certified Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Center, so South Brooklyn residents who are having acute heart attacks can receive comprehensive cardiac services close to home. With the replacement of these six end-of-life echocardiogram machines, cardiac patients will receive the state-of-the-art care they deserve.
“At South Brooklyn Health, providing state-of-the-art cardiology services that meet the needs of our patients and community is an important component of the hospital’s clinical growth strategy,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya. “We serve a patient population that is older, and has several chronic health conditions, such as high blood pressure, and diabetes – all of which are precursors to poor cardiac health. With the acquisition of this equipment, South Brooklyn Health will be able to optimally manage our patients’ health and get them on the road to recovery. I am thankful to Assemblyman Colton for this generous funding and his continued support.”
“The acquisition of these additional echocardiogram units means we will have enhanced capabilities to diagnose and manage heart disease,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Chief of Cardiology Sudhanva Hegde.“Heart disease is a leading cause of death in Brooklyn; however, with this significant funding from Assemblyman Colton, South Brooklyn Health will be able to provide patients with the care they need to prevent and manage cardiovascular disease.”
“I am happy to provide this $1 million grant to South Brooklyn Health as it continues its long tradition of meeting the critical health needs of the Southern Brooklyn community,” said NYS Assembly Member William Colton. “The replacing of these lifesaving units will not only save lives of patients needing cardiac care but also will diagnose and manage the large segment of our community with cardiovascular disease issues and help South Brooklyn Health expand its high quality of care to our community’s health needs.”
“NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health’s investment in improving cardiac care is an important milestone in meeting the health care needs of the residents of South Brooklyn and its neighboring communities. I applaud Assemblyman Colton for his continued commitment to protecting New York City’s public health system” said Rosanne DeGennaro, Chair of the South Brooklyn Health Community Advisory Board.
A 2022 community health needs assessment showed that heart disease is the second leading cause of premature death for Brooklynites, and that 60% have one or more chronic health conditions. South Brooklyn Health also provides health care to disproportionately older population, with nearly half who are 45 and older, and who are often in greater need for cardiology services. In 2021, South Brooklyn Health had over 290,000 outpatient visits, a roughly 20% increase since 2018.
South Brooklyn Health’s cardiology division is a fully accredited New York State Cardiac Diagnostic center that includes both a diagnostic catheterization lab and a cardiac non-invasive lab. Its nine-bed Critical Care Unit and five-bed Coronary Recovery Unit are staffed by a full-time attending cardiologist and cardiology fellow. Outpatient cardiology clinic services are provided for patients discharged from the hospital for follow-up and cardiac consultation services.
On October 6, South Brooklyn Health celebrated the future opening of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, marking a new era of health care services for the South Brooklyn community. The ceremony marked a major milestone in the extensive process to repair and protect the health care campus after sustaining significant damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Construction of the new hospital is funded by $923 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and includes upgrades to the rest of the health care campus, including a 4-foot wall to withstand a 500-year storm and flood-resilient power, heating, cooling, and water systems.
